I was afraid that it was going to be hot, smelly, scary, and very loud. I\u2019m going to tell you to take all that and multiply it by 500 and take the product and cram it into 1 city. That is Port-au-Prince for you. We had to drive through the city going 80 miles per hour stop and go and all the people swarmed the truck. At first it was creepy but then I figured out they were trying to sell you stuff\u2026\u2026.&#8221; \u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So begins 12 year old Mason Hymer&#8217;s account of his trip to Haiti with his parents, Aaron and Emily, and his sister Mackenzie in early March. \u00a0But there had already been quite a journey before that. \u00a0Between flight cancellations due to bad weather, rescheduling, airport changes, additional cancelled flights, more rescheduling, followed by delayed flights and consequentially missed flights, followed by late arrivals of flights&#8230; (the words of Chesterton come to mind, &#8220;An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered&#8221;<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">) &#8230; it would seem we might call this trip\u00a0&#8220;Mission trip fraught with inconvenience.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"text_exposed_show\">\n<p>Our\u00a0late arrival in Port Au Prince meant\u00a0we\u00a0could not safely travel further before dark. \u00a0The Hymer&#8217;s called friends they knew,\u00a0Eric &amp; Jennifer Lotz,\u00a0who opened their home to accommodate us. \u00a0After two grueling days of travel, we were so grateful for a place to stay. \u00a0We found\u00a0ourselves driving down the road to Les Cayes a day later than planned and we passed a bus completely burned out, having apparently been a part of a dangerous riot or manifestation the day before, through which we would have been traveling but for those inconveniences&#8230;<a href=\"https:\/\/justmercy.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2426.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3243\" src=\"https:\/\/justmercy.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2426-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2426\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justmercy.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2426-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/justmercy.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2426-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were\u00a0provided for and kept out of a potentially dangerous situation.<\/p>\n<p>Inconvenience, or Intervention? &#8230;.. \u00a0 Romans 8:28 comes to mind.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3181\" style=\"width: 483px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/justmercy.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2416.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3181\" class=\" wp-image-3181\" src=\"https:\/\/justmercy.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2416-640x480.jpg\" alt=\"Aaron &amp; Emily riding on the luggage in the truck \" width=\"473\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justmercy.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2416-640x480.jpg 640w, https:\/\/justmercy.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2416-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/justmercy.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2416-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/justmercy.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2416-268x200.jpg 268w, https:\/\/justmercy.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2416-700x525.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3181\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aaron &amp; Emily riding on the luggage in the truck<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After stopping to buy some rice where they grow it, we\u00a0met\u00a0the taxi boat in Les Cayes and motored\u00a0to Ile a Vache to open up the base and start getting things organized. \u00a0The story of building the fishing boat over the next few weeks was in the last update (see link above) but while that was going on, so were many other things.\u00a0\u00a0 One of the men working with Bill is Sonet. Last year while visiting with him, we found out that he and Lana had been together for 18 years, had two teenage\u00a0daughters, but never married. Many couples in Haiti will not marry unless they have \u201cthe dress\u201d and the ring and a wedding. They said yes so I had been hoping to help that happen. When we met the Hymers and told them about it, they took on the tax of\u00a0finding a dress, a ring, and other things to bless Sonet and Lana. The Hymer\u2019s daughter-in-law Hannah sent her wedding dress which Sherlie altered to fit Lana. We had found the perfect suit for Sonet at a used clothing store here in the states and had brought it to him. They were set.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Bill and I, Sherlie and Estane took the water taxi to Les Cayes to attend the wedding at Lana\u2019s cousin\u2019s home. The next day we cooked a meal at the base for their family members who had come to be with them for the wedding. After all those years, they were finally married and we rejoiced with them.<\/p>\n<p>Mackenzie and Mason have their own non-profit in the states called Bundles of Hope (check them out on FB). They provide backpacks with pajamas, a toothbrush, other toiletries, and a stuffed animal for foster children taken from bad situations. In Haiti parents don&#8217;t love on their kids like in America. It was actually very hard for me at first to see their lack of love because I have grown up in a home with lots of love so of course all the little kids were starved for attention. I had so much fun coloring with them, playing games with them, and loving on the little kiddos!!!!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On March 11<sup>th<\/sup>, we went to Grande Sab to give Bibles to the children there who had completed The Greatest Journey course since January. We took a wild boat ride around the island to get there. After Aaron and Emily passed out the Bibles, the children then sang a thank you song in English! What a lot of work went into those songs. She lives with several other members of her extended family, and the home being built for her and her daughter is at a stand-still.\u00a0 Estane was becoming more curious about Christ and her own walk!\u00a0 She doesn&#8217;t speak English and I&#8217;m sure she didn&#8217;t really understand what Aaron and I were talking about on the deck, but the night of her 26th birthday, she was interested!\u00a0 She saw our Bibles and she was curious.\u00a0 Language is a huge barrier in sharing the love of Christ, but it isn&#8217;t impossible!\u00a0 Through our actions and our attitudes, people can see the joy!!\u00a0 That night, we asked Sonel, our translator, to help us share with her some thoughts God was laying on our hearts for her.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t wait to see what God has planned for Estane&#8217;s journey&#8230;and I am just grateful He used us and gave us the words to help her on her walk!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>More pictures of the Hymer&#8217;s time in Haiti are below. \u00a0(By the way, the end of Mason&#8217;s account said, <em><strong>&#8220;If Bill and Janet ask us to go again, my bags would be packed in a matter of seconds!&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> )<em><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Please continue to pray for JUST MERCY and our neighbors in Haiti as we seek to bring the love of Jesus to them.
